Maitland Recycling Workshop

Ever wonder what really happens to your plastic after you toss it in the yellow bin? Here’s your chance to find out and learn how to make a real difference at home.

Maitland City Council, in partnership with Hunter Resource Recovery and Resourceful Living, is inviting locals to a FREE Recycling Workshop on Tuesday, January 20, at East Maitland Library. Whether you’re a seasoned recycler or just starting out, this hands-on session will help you level up your sustainability game.

The Magic of Recycling

Think of recycling as modern-day alchemy. It takes what we throw away and transforms it into something useful again but the process starts with you.

At this workshop, you’ll get an inside look at how your plastics are collected, sorted, and repurposed into brand-new products. You’ll also walk away with simple, actionable ways to reduce waste at home because recycling doesn’t stop at the bin.

Here’s what you’ll learn:

  • What really happens to plastic after collection

  • The science behind turning plastic into new products

  • Everyday recycling mistakes to avoid

  • Creative ways to cut down on household waste

  • How to be part of a more sustainable Maitland

🛠️ Behind the Bin: What Happens to Your Plastics?

Most people think their job is done once the bin is out but that’s just the beginning. Plastics go on a journey involving sorting facilities, high-tech machinery, and partnerships with manufacturers.

👉 Tip: Always rinse your containers – leftover food and liquids can spoil an entire batch of recyclables.

“Contamination is the biggest barrier to effective recycling,” says a spokesperson from Hunter Resource Recovery. “Education is key – and that’s why workshops like this are so important.”

🏡 Waste Less at Home Without Even Trying

Small changes can lead to big impact. Whether it’s switching to refillable containers, reusing packaging, or just sorting correctly, every action counts.

This workshop will give you the tools to make waste reduction part of your daily routine. No guilt, no overwhelm.

👉 Tip: Create a recycling ‘station’ at home with clear labels for each bin. It makes sorting second nature even for the kids.

According to the EPA, households that actively reduce and sort their waste can cut landfill contribution by up to 40%.

♻️ Recycling Myths Busted!

Think pizza boxes can’t be recycled? Or that all plastics are treated the same? Think again.

This session will bust some of the biggest myths around recycling so you can stop second-guessing and start sorting smart.

👉 Tip: Soft plastics like bread bags don’t belong in the yellow bin – they require special drop-off points like supermarkets.

“Knowledge is power,” says Craig Reucassel from War on Waste. “The more you understand the system, the more effective your efforts become.”

🌍 Be Part of Maitland’s Greener Future

Recycling is more than just a personal habit, it’s a community effort. By learning how to recycle better, you’re helping create a cleaner, more sustainable Maitland for future generations.

When you show up, you’re not just attending a workshop, you’re joining a movement.

👉 Tip: Bring a friend or your kids, the more people get involved, the greater the impact.

The NSW Environment Strategy reports that communities engaged in local environmental initiatives are more likely to adopt long-term sustainable behaviours.
