Christmas can be an overwhelming time with buying presents for the entire family, organising meals, purchasing food as well as having family staying.
We want to take Christmas back to basics and not get to February and realise that we overspent and are now in debt.
Christmas at its roots is the Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. It is a day that we share love and joy by spending time with family and friends. We exchange loving and thoughtful gifts to those who are nearest and dearest to us over food and drink.
Though over the years, Christmas has become a crazy rush, with family’s over spending on both presents and foods trying to put on “the best” Christmas. Though what if we told you it did not have to be that way? We have a few tips that you can take into this festive season that will make everyone smile!
- Clean out your home
Christmas is the perfect opportunity to give your house a clean. Start with toys, furniture, clothes and review those gifts you received through the year that are still in their packaging. Tt is the time of year to either sell on sites such as gum tree or donate to your local charity to help those less fortunate.
You will feel great having a clean out before the big day!
2. Wrapping gifts
Gift wrapping can be expensive and something that the budget cannot afford at this time of year. Check around your house for old newspapers, especially the ones that are home delivered. Not only are you repurposing the newspaper, but once it is unwrapped it can be placed straight into the recycling.
3. Organising Christmas Breakfast, lunch and dinner
It is so easy to get carried away with buying food, stressing that you hope “you will have enough”! Let me assure you, I am sure you will always have enough food. However it is extremely important to understand, throwing out food is throwing out money and we all want to save a bit more money!
Firstly, think about what you will do for entree, main and dessert. Then work out how many guests you will be having for the meal. From there if you follow the healthy weight watchers portions you can estimate how much everyone would go for.
½ of your plate should be vegetables (think variety and colour!)
¼ of your plate should be good-quality carbohydrates – such as potato, wholegrain pasta, brown rice, couscous, quinoa
¼ of your plate should be lean protein, like lean meat, poultry, eggs or legumes.
Don’t forget that after Christmas breakfast, lunch or dinner freeze the leftover food to keep fresh and continue eating through the week.
4. Track your spending
It is very easy in today’s climate to tap and go, add in your paypal details and forget about how much has actually been spent. At Resourceful Living we absolutely LOVE this app for tracking our spending. Download it today and see what you think – https://www.moneysmart.gov.au/tools-and-resources/calculators-and-apps/mobile-apps/trackmyspend
5. Plan for Christmas 2022
Once Christmas 2022 finishes, start looking towards next year, by setting a weekly savings goal, that you will thank yourself for come November. We hear people all the time say – “Christmas came around fast,” unfortunately if you are not organised this is what seems to happen and then it leads to overspending. However, if through the year you put money aside and begin shopping a bit every month you will find Christmas is not such a drain on the bank accounts.
